The Amazing Health Benefits of Seaweed

The Amazing Health Benefits of SeaweedThe Amazing Health Benefits of Seaweed

Seaweed offers one of the broadest ranges of minerals of any food found on Earth. It is the chief source of iodine and provides vital nutrients including magnesium, calcium, the B-vitamins riboflavin and pantothetic acid and lignans, which are plant compounds that have cancer-curing effects. Scientists attest that the low cancer rate in many eastern countries is due to the seaweed their population takes in daily.

Seaweed For Nutrition and Weight Loss

Seaweed is one of the healthiest foods on the planet, packed with mineral, antioxidants and vitamins that heal the body and increase energy. It is also one of the perfect weight loss foods as it is low in calories yet adds vital nutrients. A 2010 study found that seaweed can reduce fat absorption rate by 75 percent, thanks to its inhibitory effect on a digestive enzyme called lipase. Scientists at Newcastle University are about to begin clinical trials on a “wonder bread” made with alginate fibers that is designed to speed weight loss.

Seaweed For Cancer Protection

Seaweed contains lignans that work to inhibit blood cell growth, the process through which fast-growing tumors not only gain extra nourishment, but send cancer cells out in the bloodstream to establish secondary tumors or metastases in other areas of the body. In addition, lignans have been credited with inhibiting estrogen synthesis in fat cells as effectively as some of the drugs used in cancer chemotherapy. In postmenopausal women, fat tissue is a primary site where estrogen is synthesized, and high levels of certain estrogen metabolites are considered a significant risk factor for breast cancer. In addition to lignans, seaweed is a very good source of the B-vitamin folic acid. Studies have shown that diets high in folate-rich foods are associated with a significantly reduced risk for colon cancer.

Seaweed For A Healthy Thyroid

The health benefits of sea vegetables are not limited to cancer protection. Seaweed is also one of nature’s richest sources of iodine, which is essential to human life. The thyroid gland adds iodine to the amino acid tyrosine to create these hormones. Without sufficient iodine, your body cannot synthesize them. Because these thyroid hormones regulate metabolism in every cell of the body and play a role in virtually all physiological functions, an iodine deficiency can have a devastating impact on your health and well-being. A common sign of thyroid deficiency is an enlarged thyroid gland, commonly called a goiter. Goiters are estimated to affect 200 million people worldwide, and in all but 4% of these cases, the cause is iodine deficiency.

Seaweed For Protecting Against Heart Disease

Seaweed has been proven in numerous studies to be very effective at preventing heart disease. Seaweed contains high levels of both magnesium and folic acid, which have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and prevent heart attacks.

Seaweed for Stress Relief

In clinical studies people who took in seaweed weekly reported lower stress levels and a more relaxed state of being. Seaweed supplies magnesium, riboflavin and pantothenic acid which work for increased energy production in the body. Pantothenic acid holds a very unique function for adrenal gland health. The adrenals play a critical role in being able to resist and control stress levels and control many of the body’s reactions to how it deals with stress when it comes. When the supply of pantothenic acid is low, stress will exhaust the adrenal glands resulting in increased fatigue, a compromised immune system prone to illness and a feeling of being anxious and overwhelmed. Seaweed greatly aids the body in managing stress and not being affected negatively by it.

Nori is one of the richest seaweeds in protein and one sheet has as much fiber as a cup of raw spinach and more omega-3 fatty acids than a cup of avocado. Nori contains vitamins B12 and C along with taurine which works to regulate cholesterol. You can eat the Nori sheets raw with a layer of rice on top of them or make your own sushi, or for a great snack, simply toast strips of Nori in the oven on low heat.

Seaweed not only aids in weight loss, improves the mood and heals the body, it also gives increased energy to help you last throughout the day. And because seaweed grows in the ocean, it contains an abundant source of vitamins and minerals that are not present or as readily available in land-grown vegetables. It is an ideal food to take in daily.

How To Keep Real Christmas Trees Fresh and Beautiful All Season

How To Keep Real Christmas Trees Fresh and Beautiful All SeasonHow To Keep Real Christmas Trees Fresh and Beautiful All Season

1. When you bring your tree home, saw a few inches off the bottom of the trunk before setting it in water.  When trees are cut, pitch oozes out and seals the pores.  By sawing off the base, you will open up the pores and the tree will be able to absorb water.

2. Before watering your tree, boil the water first, let stand for 5 minutes and then water it!  This will keep the sap from getting hard and allow for the water to go up the bark!  Cold water clog the opening with sap.

3. A freshly cut tree can use a gallon of water in 24 hours so be sure to keep the tree stand filled and never let the water level go below the tree’s base.  A rough rule of thumb is that a typical tree might absorb a quart of water for each inch of its diameter.

4. Once indoors, keep the tree away from any heating sources and heating ducts, sunlight and fans, which will dry the tree out.  A humidifier will help keep the needles fresher longer and reduce the fire risk.

LED lights should be used on Christmas trees as they use 80% less energy than traditional bulbs and remain cool to the touch even after hours of use, which is a very important and even key point to keeping your tree from dehydration!

Natural Ladybug Deterrents

Natural Ladybug DeterrentsNatural Ladybug Deterrents

Normally when there is a ladybug infestation in your home they are either simply trying to escape the cold or they are actually eating and therefore getting rid of certain pests that you cannot see around the window frames, door frames, etc. However, they can become a real problem just by numbers alone if left unchecked.

Cloves, bay leaves, citronella, lemon, citrus scents, etc (both the real thing and the essential oils) can deter them. Adding a bit of any of the above in essential oil form to a spray bottle filled with water and a touch of dish soap and spraying around window and door frames will generally deter them from returning. And remember to get your basement windows as well!

Diatomaceous Earth is even better. If you dust it around your windows, doors and outside around the foundation of your home, it helps to keep them away. Using a “pest pistol” is a great way to get a fine and even amount of DE where you need it to go.

Now, getting rid of them in the first place however should be delicate work, minding not to harm the ladybugs as much as possible since they are actually very beneficial.

Directions:

Simply vacuum them up with a Dyson or similar vacuum and pour them out into the garden, bushes, trees, etc where they can continue to get rid of pests. Immediately apply your deterrent(s).

You can also simply brush them with a soft paintbrush or similar tool into a bucket or container in order to carry them outdoors. From there, spray your scents or even better yet diatomaceous Earth at the important entrances for them around your home.

Following these directions should keep the beneficial ladybugs where they belong!

How To Preserve The Flavor and Potency Of Dried Herbs

How To Preserve The Flavor and Potency Of Dried Herbs
How To Preserve The Flavor and Potency Of Dried Herbs

Preserving the fresh flavor of herbs does not end with drying them or even purchasing freshly dried herbs. To ensure your dried herbs stay fresh and potent all winter follow these tips.

1. Store dried herbs in a glass or ceramic sealed container that has an airtight lid. Plastic containers are permeable and allow air to easily come in dulling the flavor and potency of dried herbs.

An excellent airtight container that works great for storing herbs in can be found here: http://amzn.to/1MgU4HK

2. Store dried herbs in dark, dry and cool areas such as a drawer or cupboard. Do not keep dry herbs under bright lights, on windowsills, on the kitchen table or near any humidity sources such as the stove or sink.

If you would like to store your dried herbs under light or out in the open for some reason like on the kitchen table, you can do so without losing any loss in flavor or potency by storing them in a heavy duty ultraviolet glass or cobalt glass container. These containers have UV filtering properties and will protect light sensitive materials so you can store them anywhere you want with no degradation. You can find heavy duty ultraviolet herb containers here: http://amzn.to/1G0vsGr

3. If self-drying your own herbs, be sure the herbs are completely dry before putting them into an airtight container for storage. You will know the herbs have been dried enough when they crumble easily between your thumb and finger. To be sure they have dried properly, check the herbs in the container after a week. If there is any moisture inside of the container they have not been dried long enough. Remove the herbs from the container and dry again until the herbs have completely dried.

4. One of the most important points to remember in keeping your dried herbs flavorful and potent throughout the winter and beyond is to be mindful when you are adding dried herbs to a recipe to always measure out the herbs away from the stove. Standing over an oven with an open herb jar will add humidity to the jar, dull the flavor of the herbs and shorten the storage life of dried herbs.

Excellent Gun Barrel Cleaning Tool!

Excellent Gun Barrel Cleaning Tool

Excellent Gun Barrel Cleaning Tool!

The most important part of your firearm to keep clean is the barrel:
The barrel is where the heat, friction, powder detonation, fouling and the like all take place. In order to keep the barrel appropriately clean to prevent malfunctions, jams, reduced muzzle energy, accuracy and the like or even at times “stovepiping” due to poor extraction, one must somewhat laboriously use traditional cleaning kits, rods, brushes, patches, etc. to keep things clean and functioning. However there is a much more efficient alternative to all of that – the bore snake.

A bore snake is an expanded cloth rope like device with an “oil patch” section, brass scrubber and swab all built into one unit. You simply add a bit of barrel cleaner (for cleaner and more effective results) such as Hoppe’s #9 to the front area of the bore snake, open the action, lock or hold the bolt open, pass the pull string through the barrel and pull it through. It cleans the barrel in one swipe. For more heavy fouling, you just pull the snake through several times for a completely thorough cleaning, slow on the first pull and faster on the next couple of pulls. No more cleaning kits, parts laying about, no more stashing cleaning rods or even losing them. The bore snake is a small, lightweight, easily rolled up and packed, unobtrusive piece of equipment that will do the job of many objects or an entire cleaning kit.

A perfect device for everything from emergency and survival situations to open combat or even simply practicing and having fun at the range with friends. It’s an easier, simpler and far more efficient alternative to complex cleaning processes. A great gift for anyone with a firearm (since everyone should have one!) and a perfect addition to any “bugout”, emergency-survival or firearm gear kit!

The bore snake is available in every caliber and can be used on ALL types of firearms.
